Michael Garvey

Your Name: Michael Garvey

Hometown: Farmington Hills, Michigan

What is your position in the district?: High School Instrumental and Vocal Music, Elementary School Beginning Instrumental Music

Are you a graduate of Lamphere Schools?: No, I graduated from Harrison High School in Farmington Hills, class of 2000.

Did you go to college, if so tell us where. What degrees do you have? : Bachelor of Music - Wayne State University, 2006. Master of Music, University of Michigan, 2013.

Tell us about your family: My wife Erin teaches instrumental music at Page Middle School, and we work together teaching Lamphere's beginning instrumental music classes. At home we have a crazy dog named Olive and a grumpy cat named Kitty.

What kind of hobbies do you have? What do you like to do?: I enjoy being an active musician outside of my work at school. I'm a cornet player with the Five Lakes Silver Band - a competitive British-style brass band (check us out at www.fivelakessilverband.com and on Facebook!) We perform several concerts each year but the highlight for me is competing in the national championships each spring. Out of all the music I studied preparing to be a music teacher, this is some of the most challenging I've ever faced, and it's a lot of fun to work at with this group of very talented musicians. I've also always enjoyed cooking, and recently home renovation has unintentionally become a relevant interest of mine.

How long have you worked at Lamphere?: 2016-17 will be my 11th school year at The Lamphere Schools.

What's your favorite thing about being a part of the Lamphere district?: I met my wife Erin here, and I enjoy being able to work together to make our music program strong. To me, there's a definite "just right" quality to our schools and our music program. We're not so big of a place that individuals get lost in the crowd, but we're large enough that we're able to offer a wide variety of opportunities that may not be available to students in a smaller district.
